Maybe you’ve already written your New Year’s Resolutions, and maybe you’ve already let a few fade into oblivion. No judgments here! But trust us when we say that this list of Mammoth Lakes-style resolutions is full of activities you’ll actually want to do in 2023!
So, before the month of January is over, take a moment to revisit your goals for this next year. Let’s see if we can’t make that list a little more enjoyable!
#1: Get that season pass you’ve always wanted
You talk about it every time you visit Mammoth: “Next year, I think I’ll just go for it and buy a season pass.” And why not make 2023 the year you finally make it happen?
Buying a season pass, either for the winter season or the summer mountain biking season is a great way to save money and motivate yourself to get on the slopes more.
#2: Visit Mammoth during a different time of year
Without a doubt, our claim to fame is our world-class ski resort and other winter sports. But, the truth is, there’s something fun and exciting to do during every season in Mammoth.
Spring, for instance, is when we welcome back visitors from all over the world to celebrate the start of the fishing season. This is also when we enjoy some of the best wildflower views of the year.
Summer is excellent for camping, hiking, mountain biking, rock-climbing and horseback riding.
And finally, fall is becoming more popular every year with photographers and nature lovers for an activity known as leaf peeping. This is when our many deciduous trees, such as quaking aspen and alder, put on a fantastic autumn show in and around Mammoth Lakes.
So, if you’ve ever only visited the Eastern Sierra during one season, make it a resolution to visit us at a different time this year! You’ll be so happy you did.
#3: Try something new on the menu
This is a New Year’s Resolution for us locals as much as it is for our welcomed visitors. After all, we tend to get into a habit of ordering the same food from the same restaurants all year long. This year, why not support Mammoth’s creative culinary scene by ordering something new.
Try out one of the newer restaurants in town like Noodle-ly or Dos Alas. Or, if you’re going to visit a Mammoth classic like the Stove or the Mogul, you might challenge yourself to order something adventurous off the menu. Either way, don’t forget to write a review afterwards!
#4: Sign up for a race
Mammoth Lakes is a wonderful area for outdoor sports. We’ve got some unbeatable running trails, crystal clear lakes for swimming, gorgeous routes for both mountain and road biking, and more. It’s truly an athlete’s paradise.
So, if you’re looking for a challenge to add to your New Year’s Resolutions, you might consider signing for an official race in 2023! Here are a few options:
-
The June Lake Triathlon takes place every August
-
The Mammoth Gran Fondo is a road bike race in September, with options for 42, 70 or 102 mile rides
-
Mammoth Trail Fest also takes place in September and features running events for all levels. You can test out your speed with a quick 1k run, challenge yourself with the incredibly steep Dragon’s Back Ascent, or go the distance with the Mammoth 26k or 50k run.
These are just a few options, but you can find a variety of running events, triathlons, and bike rides throughout the year.
#5: Live in the present
Practicing mindfulness and meditation is a popular New Year’s Resolution. But in the hustle and bustle of daily life, it can be difficult to maintain a consistent practice.
Up here in the mountains, though, living in the present is a way of life. When you’re able to connect with nature and enjoy precious time with friends and family, you’ll find yourself practicing mindfulness without even trying!
If you are looking to be a bit more intentional with this resolution, though, we do have some suggestions! You might try out a yoga or meditation class Apres Zen Yoga & Wellness Studio. Or, book yourself a massage at Snowcreek Athletic Club.
When you are ready to go back home, you might find that it’s easier to keep the practice going! Don’t worry, you can always come back when you need a mindfulness retreat in the mountains.
#6: Take up a new hobby
Maybe you’re looking to add a new hobby to your life as part of your New Year’s Resolutions. Mammoth Lakes is a wonderful place to explore your newfound craft or interest.
For one thing, the Eastern Sierra is a prime location for activities like birding. In fact, the Mammoth Lakes Trail System has a list of designated trails so that birders and other nature lovers know exactly where to get the best views.
Or, if you’re looking for something more artistic or crafty, take a look at some of the classes offered by the Mono Arts Council. From wine painting classes to pottery workshops and more, you can explore your creative side while surrounded by landscapes that have inspired many artists over the years.
#7: Become a pro at star gazing
This year, you might find yourself looking to the stars to guide you through 2023. And what better place to start than in an area with a crystal clear view of the galaxy! All you need to do is bundle up, download your favorite stargazing app, and head outside. Or, you might bring your own telescope on your next trip to Mammoth to enjoy the night views right from your condo.
Either way, if you’re looking to explore amateur astronomy this year, the Eastern Sierra is the ideal place to start. Check out our Mammoth Resorts to find the perfect stay.
#8: Keep the Mammoth magic alive
One of the best New Year’s Resolutions we can think of is adding a little bit more joy to the world around you. If you can spend this year thinking of ways to cheer up a stranger, help someone in need, or be a better community member, you’re sure to have a fulfilling 2023.
And what better place to begin than in a small town like Mammoth Lakes. Whether you’re striking up a friendly conversation with the employees at Vons or paying for someone's coffee at Looney Bean, you’re actively contributing to what makes our little community so special. And, hey, if you happen to be in town in May, don’t miss out on our annual Community Clean-Up Day! It’s a wonderful day of community bonding while keeping Mammoth clean and beautiful for locals and visitors to enjoy.
